Franziska Piontek (neé Köckert) studied Physics, specializing in Astrophysics, at Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen (Germany) and University of Maryland (USA). In her Ph.D. thesis at the Astrophysical Institute Potsdam she investigated the formation of disk galaxies using computer simulations.
Since October 2009 she is a Master's student in the Master of Peace and Security Studies Program at the Institute for Peace and Security Studies in Hamburg, focusing especially on climate change and security. In her Master's thesis she focuses on questions of conflict or cooperation with respect to adaptation measures to climate change in the Nile Basin.
