CLISEC on migration
Migration is currently a hot topic, not only in Europe but worldwide, as thousands of people from the Middle East and Africa are seeking to enter Europe, fleeing conflict and in expectation of improved living conditions. Several prominent media outlets have identified climate change as a driving factor behind this migration. For example, Time Magazine explains “how climate change is behind the surge of migrants to Europe”.
CLISEC has been working extensively on the drivers and effects of migration in different contexts and various party of the world, including the Middle East and Africa, as well as on international migration policy. While climate and environmental change may be one factor affecting the conditions for migration, we warn against drawing simple connections as our research indicates that reality is more complex. The conceptualisation of migrants as security threats can be counterproductive and divert attention from the underlying causes as well as possible solutions. Our research highlights the difficulties an overly simplified view of migration may pose for successful and humane policy making.
