Dr. Elina Marmer
Research Group Climate Change and Security
Department of Geography
KlimaCampus Hamburg
During her stay at CLISEC Elina will work on the project “Contribution of Return Migrants to Water Management and Water Conflict Resolution in the Sahel Region” in close cooperation with Dr. Papa Sow (Warwick University, UK).
Elina has received her Diploma in Meteorology from University of Hamburg in 2002 and a PhD in Natural Sciences from University of Hamburg and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in 2006.
During her PhD, she contributed to model development for improved precipitation forecast and dealt with the uncertainties of forecasting extreme events like droughts and floods. She studied the impact of shipping emissions on Mediterranean climate, focusing on physical and chemical atmospheric modelling, at the same time taking a great interest in the geo-political and socio-economical aspects of this sensitive topic.
During her PostDoc at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy, she received the opportunity to converge fundamental research of climate physics and atmospheric chemistry with applied studies on socio-political impacts of climate change. Working closely with climate change policy makers she became acquaint with various socio-political climate change issues, in particular with migration. She participated in studies of African migration to Europe.
