Kesheng Shu studied Geology at China University of Geosciences and Economics at Wuhan University. He completed his master degree in Regional Economics at Chongqing University of Business and Technology. His PhD. research in Human Geography was hosted by CLISEC at Universität Hamburg and the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
In his PhD thesis, Kesheng Shu focused on tailoring a sustainable development approach for the bioenergy industry in China. To achieve this goal, he developed the Bioenergy Industry Decision Support System (BioDSS), simulating the entire lifecycle of bioenergy from biomass supply, transportation, conversion to bioenergy products distribution and by-products reuse.
Kesheng Shu is the Principal Investigator of the project “Bioenergy Landscapes in China: Blessing or Curse?” funded by the Center for a Sustainable University at Universität Hamburg. He currently works on a holistic assessment of bioenergy development in China to harmonize its economic, social and environmental benefits. In particular, the following two research directions are of his interests: the interactions between bioenergy utilization and regional climate change, and the role of bioenergy in urban-rural interaction within the energy landscape.
