John Geary is a PhD candidate working in the Research Group on Climate Change and Security (CLISEC) at Hamburg University. He is carrying out research focusing on how climate change impacts livelihoods in coastal communities in southern Myanmar as well as the potential for conflict related to land use under the supervision of Dr. Jürgen Scheffran.
He graduated with a master’s degree in Environmental Management from University of Nottingham with a thesis focusing on constructing a Climate Change vulnerability index for agriculture in African countries. He also holds a M.Sc. in Economics from University of Copenhagen and a MA in International Affairs from George Washington University. Previously, he worked as a consultant on climate change for the World Bank and wrote a book chapter on the Impact of Climate Change on Health in Latin America as well as a chapter on the causes of deforestation for a textbook on climate change and forests.
He is particularly interested on the social impacts of climate change, the possibilities of and constraints to diversification, and the drivers of conflict in forest ecosystems.
